Stubbieee’s Review of

“Little Shop of Horrors”

(below review message from Mistress)

You might enjoy this version of ‘The Little Shop of Horrors’, if you do not compare it to the 1986 musical remake staring Rick Moranis that we all may have seen.  The premise is the same, however that is where any similarity ends.  This 71-minute film is a well-known early Roger Corman B-film production that was shot in only two days.

I assume that we all know the story about hapless pathetic loser Seymour who works in a flower store and creates a carnivorous plant that feeds on human flesh.  Seymour and the plant become good “friends” and since the plant needs to eat, Audry Jr. convinces Seymour to start killing people for her food.

Take the physical comedy of the ‘Three Stooges’, mix in the deadpan ad-libs of the Marx brothers, then produce it with the budget of ‘Night of the Living Dead’ and you may have the idea.  Even the narrative cops reminded me of our ‘Dragnet’ boys.  It’s a horror comedy blending black humor, parody, and tongue in cheek ethnic dialogue where every line delivers a punch.

Every character that walks onto the set is exceptional and unique. We’ve got a guy who snacks on carnations, an old lady, Siddie Shiva, who loses a family member every day, a hypochondriac mother with a fetish for diseases, and a masochistic undertaker who visits the dentist and almost has an orgasm having his teeth pulled.

I especially enjoyed the staccato humor delivered by Mel Welles, who plays the flower shop owner, Gravis Mushnik.  There are some cute malapropism in the script and even Jack Nicholson, in his feature film debut, as the dental patient contributed to the film’s abundance of campy acting.

I give this version of  ‘The Little Shop of Horrors’ four sissy sticks  for the film’s concept, premise, and influence.  This original version has been touted as a cult classic for its unbelievable mix of characters, innovative story, and improbable situations
