Stubbieee’s Movie Review

What would you say if I said let’s go back to my room – let’s bring Thea.”

The movie XX/XY is one that you will either watch twice or you will stop forever after the first twenty minutes or so. This is a very true to life story of three people who meet in college and experiment with sex, drugs, and honesty. We have Thea, the rave wild child who dorms with Sam, the pragmatic and insightful love interest, and there is Coles the indecisive libertine who never really grows up.

The movie is “rife” with insipid awkward moments as our three characters first stumble through college then ten years later struggle to enjoy what they think they have only settled for. Don’t watch for the comedy, it’s a soap style relationship flick that will leave feeling the full weight of morality and monogamy.

With that said, all the characters deliver believable portrayals of someone we all know or can identify. Mark Ruffalo’s performance, as Coles, should appeal to any man who has straddled the fence between the white lie and radical honesty. Maya Strange and Kathleen Robertson play to every woman who competes for every man. Petra Wright, Ruffalo’s, adult love interest, provides an understated influence on everyone and really closes out the story in a very symbolic way.

The movie’s cinematography is unique with its numerous close-up shots and the soundtrack, while stifled, seemed to complement every scene quite nicely.

For all its emotional content, the movie never really engaged me and I used the pause button lots. All the quipped dialogue seemed to detract from excellent body language and perfectly ambiguous situations. Two plus sissy sticks for the well-done reality and stage presence of the cast. Rather than fold to the competition, JoJo and his family decide recruit new talent off the streets of DC. After a bit of advertising and Saturday afternoon interviewing, JoJo hires a curious crew consisting of a cock-eyed amateur, Caramel the transsexual, Suzi their token white girl, a singing beauty contestant, and penicillin popping pro named Chlamydia.

Mix in a host more of crazy characters and situations, and watch the funny side of daily survival. This Girl’s Life

Netflix summarizes the movie ‘This Girl’s Life’ as a “provocative pastiche”. One definition of ‘pastiche’ is: “an incongruous mixture; a hodgepodge; a postmodern play-writing technique that fuses a variety of styles, genres, and story lines to create a new form”. This movie does contain an abundance of provocative ambiguities presented in a hodgepodge story that you will either love or hate.

Juliette Marquis plays ‘Moon’, an intelligent and compassionate, yet self-defeating and conflicted porn star. However, do not watch for the porn. The only thing hardcore in this film is the reality that persistently interrupts Moon’s every true feeling of success.

Filmed in a first person pseudo documentary style, we live a slice of Moon’s life as she narrates her personal life and professional experiences. Marquis’ character is quite self-assured, albeit a few moments of naïveté, and has a tranquil beauty that reminds us of Angelina Jolie or Milla Jovovich. In this autobiographical story, Moon admittedly enjoys sex and uses most of her porn pay to care for her ailing father ‘Pops’ played by James Woods. Woods must have done substantial research into Parkinson’s disease, as his performance is quite convincing.

The women’s musings on the differences between men and women are exploited in the later half of the movie when Moon starts a sexual infidelity investigation service, the SIA. While trying to leave the porn business, Moon supplements her income by testing the monogamy of other women’s men. She does enjoy a short-lived success before a revengeful salesman, played by Michael Rapaport, in one of the film’s most affective scenes, discovers her true agenda.

Her tentative romantic relationship with Kip Pardue, is often interrupted by the needs of her dependant father. Even Tomas Arana, as the principled film producer ‘Mr.A’, is tenaciously pressuring Moon to renew her contract with Primal Films. Cheyenne Silver, a real life porn pro, brings a very tense reality to Moon when she discovers that they both may have contracted AIDS.

This is a very realistic, believable, and emotionally charged film with excellent performances by Juliette Marquis and James Woods. After all, how ugly are you when a dog has to close his eyes to hump your leg?

Three [ stars ] for the film’s real feel via Marquis’ effective into the camera digressions and her character’s inspiring survival skills.

Now For Our’s….

This Girl’s Life is a movie than can create a dilemma or a dueling tension for the viewer. On the one hand, “Moon” played by Juliette Marquis is a striking beautiful lady who portrays a porn star who becomes an infidelity investigator … all the while creating many arousing moments in the movie. The movie begins with an innuendo-laden discussion on the mouth and how it can be used for sucking…mmmmm, enough said there.

We also get to see plenty of nudity of very hot-bodied women, and and ….and… a brief moment of male nudity…which finally debunked the myth of the BBC!!!! I also enjoyed the line where she answers the question of what her favorite sexual position was, she states that it is “68″….”its where you go down on me….and I owe you one”.

However, on the other hand, we also see the story behind the story. She recounts the suicide of her mother- possibly due to the guilt of an affair, a dependent father struggling with parkinsons (played by James Woods- with both many comedic and sad moments), and several incidents in the movie that bring home the realities of the consequences of sex without discretion.

We see severed relationships, broken families, and an AIDS scare. So we are led along a path of both pleasure and pain, profit and loss, love and hate. Moon seemed to try to lead a life of disconnect while seeking her independence, caring for her father, and dating. It was not until an angry cheating husband tried to sexually assault her, that she finally decided to make some changes in her life. After fighting off her would be attacker, we see her contemplating life and eventually concluding…”we can reincarnate while we live…right?”

Soooo….I rate it 3 stiffies for mutilple sex scenes and the hot hot hot babes, and two thumbs up for this girl getting life a bit more figured out…:)
