Stubbieee’s Review

Few films have so successfully blended black comedy into an operatic musical as well as this production of ‘The Little Shop of Horrors’. This 1986 film version of the Broadway musical is an entertaining movie about a nerdy milquetoast who nurtures a carnivorous plant that mysteriously appears during a total eclipse of the sun.

Narrated in Greek chorus style by the Motown sound of ‘The Urchins’ and staged on an urban 1960’s skid row, this story of a failing florist Mr. Mushnik and his reversal of fortune is well known for its superb casting and comedic treatment of misery, sadomasochism, murder, and abuse.

Rick Moranis is perfection as Seymour, the nebbish who is overwhelmed when his own good fortune grows too big for him to control and Ellen Greene, reprising her role in the original musical, is delightful as Audrey, the object of Seymour’s affections.

Vincent Gardenia plays the greedy flower shop owner, Mr. Mushnik and Bill Murray is hysterical as Arthur Denton, a masochist who enjoys the dentist and meets his match in Steve Martin as the abusive, sadistic, nitrous huffing Elvis-like ‘Orin Scrivello, DDS’. James Belushi plays an advertising executive who wants to sell Audry II worldwide and John Candy plays a ‘skid row radio’ host of the bizarre and unusual.

The songs are all memorable, from “Somewhere That’s Green” to “Suddenly Seymour” to “Skid Row,” plus the original song “Mean Green Mother From Outer Space.” Steve Martin’s iconic musical number “Be A Dentist” is comedy genius. The singing Audrey II embodies pure evil with his renditions of “Feed Me” and “Suppertime”. Levi Stubbs, of The Four Tops, provides the superb voice of the singing, lip-smacking plant.

The theatrical release of Little Shop of Horrors ends with Seymour destroying the monstrous bloodthirsty plant and living happily ever after with Audrey. Watch it first and then be sure to check out Frank Oz’s original, downbeat, apocalyptic ending, which was rejected by test audiences; it’s on You Tube:

John Goodman (Coyote Ugly) revisits his role as the frugal father, who blows the family nest egg unknowingly due to Bex’s influence. Julie Hagerty plays a pivotal support role; Lynn Redgrave and John Lithgow make cameo contributions to the film’s most slapstick scene.

Recommend for everyone from those who speak Prada to anyone who ever had to manage their money. I give ‘Confessions’ three sissy sticks for its even delivery of comedy and ease of viewing.
