The movie XX/XY is one that you will either watch twice or you will stop forever after the first twenty minutes or so. This is a very true to life story of three people who meet in college and experiment with sex, drugs, and honesty. We have Thea, the rave wild child who dorms with Sam, the pragmatic and insightful love interest, and there is Coles the indecisive libertine who never really grows up.
The movie is “rife” with insipid awkward moments as our three characters first stumble through college then ten years later struggle to enjoy what they think they have only settled for. Don’t watch for the comedy, it’s a soap style relationship flick that will leave feeling the full weight of morality and monogamy.
With that said, all the characters deliver believable portrayals of someone we all know or can identify. Mark Ruffalo’s performance, as Coles, should appeal to any man who has straddled the fence between the white lie and radical honesty. Maya Strange and Kathleen Robertson play to every woman who competes for every man. Petra Wright, Ruffalo’s, adult love interest, provides an understated influence on everyone and really closes out the story in a very symbolic way.
The movie’s cinematography is unique with its numerous close-up shots and the soundtrack, while stifled, seemed to complement every scene quite nicely.
For all its emotional content, the movie never really engaged me and I used the pause button lots. All the quipped dialogue seemed to detract from excellent body language and perfectly ambiguous situations. Two plus sissy sticks for the well-done reality and stage presence of the cast. Watch it with your mate and decide for yourself.
